Traveler's Manual: Avoid Surprise Charges

DFW's toll and parking system is automated, but it has technological traps that can cost you dearly.

⚠️ The GPS and Toll Trap

Critical Alert: When leaving the airport, NEVER set your GPS to "Avoid Tolls." This can cause the navigation system to guide you through side service exits instead of the main toll plazas.

Consequence: If you exit via a service road, the system does not register your exit ("Ticket not closed"). The next time you enter, the system will think you never left and charge you an accumulated fee for days or weeks. Always follow physical "Exit / Toll Plaza" signs.

🎫 Exit Issues

Users frequently report that exit machines run out of receipt paper or fail to read the TollTag. If you need a receipt for business expenses, be patient and be prepared to call the assistance button if the machine doesn't print it.

What to expect

Travelers often point out both advantages and challenges when using parking services, highlighting aspects such as the convenience of valet parking or Cell Phone Lots, but also difficulties with signage and layout.

Cell Phone Lots

Location

The North Cell Phone Lot is located at the north end of the airport, directly before the north toll plaza.
The South Cell Phone Lot is located at the south end, near the intersection of Rental Car Drive and Southgate Avenue.

  • Lots are free, with no additional cost for waiting.
  • Quick pickup of customers upon arrival.
  • Parking is limited to 2 hours in both lots.
  • Vehicles waiting in Cell Phone Lots must be attended by a driver at all times. They cannot be left unattended or parked overnight.

🗣️ What users say

"Cell Phone Lots" are an appreciated resource for DFW visitors, but according to user comments, there is room for improvement in the overall experience, especially regarding signage and additional services. Opinions on comfort vary. Areas usually offer enough parking space, but can fill up quickly during peak hours. Users appreciate the ability to wait without time pressure, but some comment that more amenities, such as restrooms or charging stations, would be useful.

Some also mention that real-time flight status updates would be beneficial to help drivers better coordinate their time. Overall, it is a practical solution for those waiting for passengers, provided there are no issues with lack of information or space during high-demand times.

🗣️ What users say

One of the most appreciated features is the parking guidance system in garages for terminals A, D, and E. This system uses green and red lights to indicate free and occupied spaces, simplifying finding a spot without having to drive through the entire garage. Travelers mention that this feature helps reduce search time, especially during peak hours.

Additionally, availability information on each level makes the parking process more efficient. Users consider terminal parking ideal for those needing quick and convenient access, particularly useful for dropping off or picking up passengers. For those in a hurry or with very early flights, this proximity is a major advantage. However, some visitors have commented that traffic flow to and from the parking lots can be complicated, and recommend using GPS in advance to avoid setbacks.

Among other criticisms, parking costs are mentioned, which some consider excessively high. Also, on rainy days or with poor visibility, signage can be difficult to read. The infrastructure, although modern in many aspects, could benefit from better lighting and clearer signage for those unfamiliar with the airport.

Positive Opinions

Access and Efficiency: Some users highlighted the effectiveness of the shuttle service from remote parking to the terminals. Although the trip can be long, the bus system helps make the journey smoother and relatively trouble-free.

Security and Organization: Green lights indicating empty spaces facilitate the parking process, preventing drivers from wasting time looking for an available spot. Others mentioned that traffic organization improvements have made operations faster and more agile.

Negative Opinions

Long Travel Time: Many travelers pointed out that the journey from remote parking to the terminals can be long and tiring, especially if there are many people waiting for buses.

Users highlight that, although more expensive, it is worth it for the time saved dropping off and picking up the vehicle quickly. Some frequent flyers state that valet parking is an investment that greatly facilitates the travel experience, especially for early flights or after returning from a long trip.

Accessible Parking

Disabled permit parking is available on levels 1 and 3 for direct terminal access. In garages, disabled spaces are found on both the upper arrivals level and the lower boarding level. One-hour areas can be used for long-term parking provided the vehicle displays a disabled parking tag or plate. Due to TSA and height restrictions, garages at some terminals are not accessible for vans.

Express and Remote lots feature wheelchair-accessible shuttle buses. Wheelchair service is offered through your airline upon request (in advance).

Connection between parking lots

Through free-to-use Terminal Link and Skylink, it is possible to reach parking lots from each of the five terminals.

DFW Airport operates a fixed-route bus service to each of the parking areas mentioned above. Buses serving Remote North and Remote South areas are fully accessible. Not all buses serving other areas are accessible, but DFW operates an accessible van service on demand 24 hours a day. Wheelchair-accessible vans can be used to travel between any public parking area and terminal buildings or to go from one terminal to another. There is no charge for using this service.
